Ikea Is Opening a Roblox Store — and Looking for Real-World Employees to Staff It

Ikea is opening a new store in Roblox and plans to hire 10 new employees to work in it. “The Co-Worker Game,” a virtual universe where players can experience the retailer’s unique approach to career progression by working in different departments and functions, will launch on June 24.

All fans are welcome to take part in the gaming experience where they can serve Ikea’s famous Swedish meatballs to players, stop at the various showrooms or use famous Ikea products to organize spaces in exchange for exclusive Ikea user-generated items, audio and other content. But Ikea also is hiring 10 employees for paid positions through June 16. Applicants will need to share their basic information, social account details, CV and answer highly specific prompts such as: “If you were a pixelated piece of Ikea furniture, which one would you be and why?” Candidates need to be over 18 and live in the UK or Ireland.

“We’re excited to launch paid work on Roblox to showcase how we do careers differently, bringing our unique careers philosophy to life,” said Darren Taylor, Country People and Culture Manager at Ikea UK and Ireland in a statement. “At Ikea, there is no set route to career progression. Our co-workers are able to change roles, switch departments, and grow in any direction they choose, both in the game or in the real world. There are many ways to learn and grow at Ikea, and that’s what Ikea on Roblox is all about.”

Virtual interviews for shortlisted applicants will take place for the fully remote virtual role between June 14 and 18, and the final 10 employees will be paid £13.15 per hour, the Ikea hourly rate for London-based employees.

“Successful applicants will be able to flex their skills, help customers, and get promoted to move departments, just like in the real world,” according to a company press release.
