Boxed.com Relaunches Under New Ownership

Bulk essentials retailer Boxed.com has been relaunched by online wholesale retailer MSG Distributors, which acquired the brand out of bankruptcy in 2023. Underpinning the relaunch will be ecommerce platform Spresso, which had been a part of Boxed until the brand’s bankruptcy, at which point the technology division was spun off as a separate entity. Jared Yaman, formerly COO and Co-founder of Boxed, now serves as Spresso’s CEO.

Boxed filed for Chapter 11 in April 2023 and shut down operations after failing to find financial alternatives amid a challenging business environment and fallout from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. The company was bought by MSG a few months later, in August 2023.

The new Boxed.com will leverage Spresso technology and MSG’s established fulfillment network to deliver an enhanced customer experience and drive growth for the revived brand. Among the improvements that have been made to the site are:

  • A streamlined shopping experience: A headless API infrastructure provides a simple checkout flow with flexible fulfillment options;
  • Comprehensive data modeling and advanced analytics: Custom data modeling will enable actionable insights and an improved experience for customers and vendors; and
  • Machine learning-powered personalization: Advanced ML applications will generate tailored product suggestions to make basket building easier, boost customer loyalty and increase sales.
