Staples Simplifies Battery Recycling with New At-Home Program

To mark Earth Month in April, Staples is launching a battery recycling program that has already seen recycling rates soar from less than 50 batteries per week to thousands per location in test stores. Beginning in April, the retailer will offer a free battery recycling box (while supplies last), in which consumers can collect batteries at home and return them to Staples for free recycling.

Staples has leveraged consumer recycling behavior research from MIT and partnered with Call2Recycle and ERI to design the program. Each battery recycling box will contain instructions for how consumers can safely store their old batteries until the box is full, when they can return it to a Staples store.

ERI will responsibly recycle the batteries collected at Staples stores and provide all their component precious metals and materials back into the circular market for beneficial reuse.
