Walmart Leases Space for Senior-Focused Primary Care in 23 Locations

Walmart will lease clinical space for senior-focused primary care centers at 23 Walmart Supercenter stores in Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas. Health care services company CenterWell will operate the clinics under its Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers brands.

While Walmart still offers pharmacy and optical services in many of its stores, the retailer recently exited the primary care business by closing all 51 Walmart Health centers, calling the business model unsustainable. The decision represented an abrupt reversal, as just weeks earlier the retailer had announced plans to add 18 new Walmart Health centers in Texas this year.

The new senior-focused CenterWell clinics will be opening in six metropolitan areas: Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando and Jacksonville, Fla.; Atlanta; Dallas/Fort Worth; and Kansas City, Mo.

“We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states,” said Brian Setzer, EVP, Walmart Health and Wellness in a statement. “Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organization is a win for customers and patients.”

CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers together comprise Humana’s Primary Care Organization, delivering care to approximately 318,000 seniors across 15 states (as of March 31, 2024). These locations include board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners and medical assistants along with care coaches, social workers, behavioral health specialists and clinical pharmacists, all dedicated to treating the medical and social needs of seniors.

“These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, and each location’s design, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, offers patients the access that they have come to expect at our clinics across the nation,” said Sanjay Shetty, MD, President of CenterWell in a statement. “We are eager to expand on our mission to help patients lead happier, healthier lives.”
