Will Google’s Next Physical Store Have a Boston Address?

Reports reveal that Alphabet Inc. plans to open a Google Store in a new mixed-use development on Newbury St. in Boston.

Alphabet Inc. plans to open a new Google Store in Boston, making it the second U.S. city to house a retail space for the technology giant, according to new reporting in the Boston Business Journal.

Sources familiar with the project revealed that the company has its sights on a ground-floor storefront at 149 Newbury St., a new five-story mixed-use building developed by L3 Capital LLC. The space is positioned in the middle of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood and surrounded by luxury and on-trend retail brands, from Rolex to Warby Parker. Alo Yoga is the only other retailer confirmed for 149 Newbury St., which will also include office spaces and luxury apartments.

Representatives from Google did not respond to requests for comment.

Google’s brick-and-mortar presence is minimal, with its only two stores being in New York City. One location opened in Chelsea in 2021, while the second store opened its doors last year in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Google store experience is designed to bring all core products within its portfolio into one hands-on experience. Shoppers can play with all Google’s hardware products, including Pixel phones, tablets, Nest smart home devices and even Fitbits. They also can book appointments with product experts to go through hardware setup, troubleshooting and educational sessions.
